CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Craniosacral Therapy developed within the field of Osteopathy in the nineteenth century. The pioneers of the field researched, explored and passed down their contributions leading to the term craniosacral therapy coined by Dr. John E. Upledger in the 1960’s. The field and practitioners of craniosacral therapy have diversified over time and have produced a large body of research.

The human body is about 70% fluid. All of the fluids in the body have a rhythm and pulse. The most basic expression of life is movement. Just like a river, the ocean or any other body of water, the fluid in our bodies behaves as fluid does. Each organ has a fluid specific to the function of that organ. Cerebral spinal fluid is the fluid of the brain and spinal cord, the nervous system. CSF acts like a cushion that protects the brain, carries excess heat and waste out, carries nutrients in and balances a piezoelectric charge and bioelectric field. The wave like motion of CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) is the hydraulic motion created by the filling and emptying of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

There is slight motion in the bones of the skull and surrounding membranes as a result of the CSF moving in and out of the system. These motions are distributed throughout the whole body via connective tissues or fascia. The walls of cells and bundles of cells, myelin sheaths around nerves, periosteum of bone and wrappings around muscles, ligaments and tendons are all connective tissue. Fascia is our organ of form that grows out of our fluid body and it is highly intelligent and receptive to input.

When there is stress, injury or imbalance in the body restrictions happen in the connective tissue system leading to obstruction of flow in the fluid body. Craniosacral therapists can feel the rhythm, flow and obstructions from anywhere in the body. Our work is to support the body’s healing and regenerative potential to unblock and release restriction, restore deep harmony and flow resulting in health and vitality.

The goal of craniosacral therapy is to support and restore symmetry, balance and flow of fluid so that the system can heal, nourish, repair and cleanse itself effectively.

Every person is unique and each session is different from the last. Working with the fluid body allows a deep level of holism to manifest and express throughout the systems of the body.
